Day 316 – Adelaide River

  • Litchfield – Adelaide River
  • 33°c
On leaving the caravan park we pulled into Batchelor to empty the dumper, as we were taking off Troy radioed that there was something wrong with his car, so we pulled up along side the park to check it out.

The kiddos took advantage of the opportunity and headed over to the swings. After some tinkering Steve & Troy decided that it wasn't a major problem and would be ok till we got back to Darwin.

Smoke on the road no longer causes us to be alarmed when driving in N.T. as it is quite commonplace as they burn off the undergrowth. A fellow camper told us that quite a lot if Victorians have been known to pull over and put the fires not realising they are a planned burn.

The Adelaide River War Cemetery was a km walk from the caravan park and was something I am very glad we took the time to see. There was a 10 minute video that we watched and Ella & I stayed on talking to the lady who was full of knowledge and was very passionate about imparting it to others.
I felt very Un-Australian when I asked over how many days did the bombing of Darwin take place and she replied it was 18 months! I was utterly shocked, how is that not common knowledge? Ella keenly took all the info sheets she could find and by the time we finished talking to the lady the others were heading back. Ella and I wandered the cemetery on our own and were saddened by the lives lost and I was especially moved by the graves marked "Unknown".

The 303 bar is home to Charlie, The Buffalo that starred in Crocodile Dundee, our very own Mick tried his hypnotising skills on him!

An impromptu caravan of kids soccer match broke out and it was so nice to see the kids making new friends and playing together if only for an afternoon.

Cards with the Tards was the call and I had to get Mama to message me the rules for Frustration. We taught our campers this new game and they picked it up quickly, it got late very quickly so we called a curfew and will finish the game tomorrow night.
