Day 58 - Down Periscope

  • Fremantle
  • 22°c
The SatNav took us on a bit of a wild goose chase, but eventually we found the Maritime Museum in Fremantle. There was so much to take in with the spice traders, the "One Pound Poms" and a beautiful Antartica exhibition.

We booked in for the Submarine tour and I highly recommend it to anyone, our tour guide was super knowledgeable and interesting. We entered through the torpedo loading area and were taken the entire length of the submarine. Oscars’ favourite part was when he showed us the beer safe and where they had found a can of beer in the air-conditioning vent. The guide also showed us where they brace the exit tunnel and how someone had placed coins in between the walls and brace and that the amount of pressure that was applied to the submarine had imprinted the coin images into the steel – it was amazing.

The H.M.A.S. Ovens was flying the Jolly Roger, which the guide explained only a Submarine that has sunk another ship is entitled to fly it. He then added that the sub had never seen active service and had sunk a decommissioned Australian ship.

The Museum was really interesting, we had to try and keep up with Ella & Occy as they ran from exhibit to exhibit, it was wonderful to see them so enthused.

My favourite exhibit was the Sandman Panelvan – I know I’m super cultured! What a true Aussie Exhibit and the best thing was it even rocked – it seriously did the eh-en eh-en!

We lunched at Cicerellos – the best Fish and chippy in Fremantle (apparently)
