Day 340 – Treehuggers!

  • Kununurra
  • 36°c
On a sightseeing trip today to see The Prison Boab Tree, which we discovered was a little further than anticipated and we really should've packed lunch!

Wyndham is a remote little town north west of Kununurra that was just past the turn of to the prison boab tree we were going to visit. It is also home of The Big Crocodile so we just had to stop in for a look and were pleasantly surprised to also find Dreamtime Park which has giant statues depicting an aboriginal family.

Wyndham also claims The Kimberley's oldest town, W.A.'s northern most town andAustralia's hottest town!

The Prison Boab Tree is the hugest boab we've seen and it's estimated to be between 2000 and 4000 years old! It has a circumference of 14.7 metres and was used as an overnight lockup for patrols taking prisoners to Wyndham.

Aside from the interesting history, we were amazed at the experience of being inside a tree! Definitely a highlight for this treehugger! It was actually quite a comfortable temperature in there and was much cooler than out in the open, we all agreed it would make an awesome treehouse.

Just a few km's back towards town we found an indigenous art site so hopped out to take a look, once again we saw awesome artwork but weren't able to find any information about it.

Driving across the road on the salt lake flats, couldn't help but wonder what this looks like in the wet season?

A well deserved swim after a hot day in the desert! Not hot enough for Steve & I though!
