Day 283 – The road goes on

  • Archer River Roadhouse – Weipa
  • 223kms
  • 27°c

Our first night in the swags was a success, a little bit warm even with just the mesh on. It was awesome to sleep under the clouds, no stars but hopefully tonight! The boys filled the cars with diesel at $2.10 a litre, that’s the most expensive we’ve encountered so far on the trip. I was hanging out for a coffee and was so dejected to be told that they only serve instant!

The roads were pretty bumpy and rough today although we did hit a few smooth patches. The cb radio paid off today with the three road trains we needed to pass through a dust storm, super glad we got one, highly recommended for anyone driving the outback roads.

We drove straight through to Weipa, didn’t have much choice as there was no where along the way to stop. We found the caravan park and set up camp before taking the kiddos over to the pool for a swim to cool down and wash the red dust off! Rach and I were very excited to read at the caravan park office that the bowls club has bingo on a Wednesday.

A quick drive and we’d seen the small mining so we headed into the bowls club to suss out dinner and bingo for tonight. We were devastated to learn that they’ve changed bingo to Monday night so we were plum out of luck! After a couple of drinks we headed next door to check out the golf club, no bingo here either but the menu looked good so we decided to hang around for dinner. Back at camp it was already dark so it was a fairly early night again.

Drop the husbands off at the bar, the kids at the old school pacman games and head on into the pokies!
